Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones. It is called a silent disease because people often don’t know they have it until they suffer a broken bone. The most common fracture areas are the wrist, hip, and spine.
Osteopenia is a condition in which bone density is lower than normal but not yet low enough to be considered osteoporosis.
Most people begin losing bone mass in their mid-30s and continue to as they age. Fortunately, a healthy lifestyle that includes weight-bearing exercise and avoids smoking and excessive alcohol use can help delay the process.
Our physicians are certified by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). They stay up to date on the most successful osteoporosis and osteopenia treatments — including medications, vitamin supplements, and diet and exercise — and use bone density testing to measure disease and treatment effectiveness.
